Every year thousands of Brits decide to escape the rainy UK climate and relocate to sunny Spain. However, the Brexit vote left many people uncertain about this choice. Many people are wondering if spending time in Spain, whether on holiday or in retirement is still possible, let alone moving or starting a business in Spain.

Nevertheless, Brits (and other people from countries outside of the EU) can apply for permission to reside in Spain, provided that they comply with the Spanish immigration rules. In this article, we will explain what may be necessary in order to move to Spain and how British citizens can obtain residency status after Brexit.

Post-Brexit removals to Spain

For those of you who have been already living in Spain for at least five years, the procedure is quite simple and straightforward. All you need to do is apply for a “permiso de residencia de larga duración”, which is the Spanish equivalent of residency permission.

However, if you have not been living in Spain for a duration of five years, you will likely need to apply for a visa to stay in the country, until you are able to meet the condition. In order to apply for a visa, you need to send your application to the Spanish Consular Office within 3 months of your arrival in Spain, regardless of the intention of your stay.

Please note that the application process may take quite a long time and it requires a few documents. Hence, it is significant to make sure you have everything you need to finalize your application. Firstly, the consular staff will consider your application, and then it will be sent to the Spanish government office nearest to the region you intend to live in.

If you successfully go through the application process, you will need to visit the consulate in order to collect the visa. Should your application include the right to work, you will then be advised to fill in some additional forms.

If you wish to move to Spain, you will need to fulfil several conditions. They include:

  • Having no criminal record,
  • Being registered as a resident in Spain,
  • Having a Spanish driving license,
  • Being registered for healthcare as a resident in Spain,
  • Proving that you can support yourself and your family (having a permanent job),
  • Having an income of at least €700 per month,
  • Proving that you have not been ejected from Spain before,
  • Two copies of an EX18 application form,
  • Original and copy of your passport,
  • One passport photo,
  • Certificate of registration (Certificado de Empadronamiento),
  • An N.I.E number (it applies if you own property in Spain or live in Spain as a resident)

As soon as your application is authorized, you can expect your visa to be ready within a month. In order for your visa to remain official, you need to arrive in Spain within three months of your application.

Moving to Spain for work

Those of you who intend to work in Spain, whether as employees or as self-employed workers, will need to suit certain requirements. Among the prerequisites that are mutual for both salaried and self-employed workers are:

  • Application for “permiso de residencia no lucrative” (non-profit visa),
  • Proof that you have a permanent income and can afford to live in Spain.

Moreover, the salaried workers will need to provide a contract of employment or other proof of employment status. Usually, as soon as you are employed by a company in Spain, the application to stay in Spain is handled by the employer.

On the other hand, if you declare yourself “self-employed” the additional documents that might be required include:

  • Proof that the commercial activity you are undertaking comply with Spanish rules,
  • Proof that you have appropriate qualifications and adequate capitals to invest in your project to make it feasible,
  • Details of the number of employees (if any),
  • Business Plan,
  • Proof that you are healthy

If you are a non-worker, in addition to an application for residence, you will need to provide your full name and account number to demonstrate that a minimum balance has been maintained across the last year.

Moving to Spain as a Pensioner

The number of old age pensioners deciding to spend their autumn years in Spain is growing year by year. It does not have to change due to the Brexit situation. However, in order to go through the application process successfully, you need to meet certain conditions. They include:

  • Proof that you are healthy and that you do not pose any risk to the public (Covid-19, smallpox, etc.),
  • Proof that your monthly income amounts to €2130 and an extra €532 for each dependant,
  • Proof that you will be able to maintain this income for one year,
  • S1 form (previously E121),
  • European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)

Moving to Spain as a Student

Students who want to move to Spain will need to provide:

  • Proof of your registration in an educational establishment,
  • A formal declaration that you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay,
  • Public/private health cover

This article is only a guide – MyCheapRemovals don’t provide pet shipping services

Are you planning to move to Spain with pets, such as dogs and cats? Well, you need to make a lot of arrangements from choosing the right airline, making official health certificates, to understanding the Spanish rules and regulations regarding pets, especially dogs.

Not have any ideas? Need guidance?

You have landed in the right place. This article will guide you on how to move to Spain with pets, and it definitely applies to dogs as well. We are mainly focusing on dogs as they are the most common pets that are taken along. Let’s dive deep!

How To Move To Spain With Dogs

Here are a few tips that you should consider if you intend to move to Spain with your dog.

  1. Prepare for travelling with a pet
If you are about to travel abroad with your pet, remember it should have:

    • up-to-date vaccination records against rabies (you must wait 21 days from the date of the rabies vaccination before travelling),
    • up-to-date veterinary health certificates, (clinical examination, deworming, deticking) taking into account the regulations of the country of departure, the country of destination and any transit airports,
    • special passport (issued by a vet) with a description of colour, race and sex of the animal together with a microchip number or tattoo,
    • microchip implant,
    • suitable container

When travelling with your pet dog, cat or ferret, the rules you must follow depend on the country you are going to or coming from. Relatedly, understanding the international as well as Spanish transportation rules and regulations is the crucial step. The next step includes visiting the accredited veterinarian where you can obtain a pet passport (the passport stays valid as long as you continue to meet the entry requirements) and other certificates necessary for exporting your furry friend. Moreover, your transport company may need a statement from your vet confirming that your pet is fit to travel. Please bear in mind that any carelessness in this step can result in the cancellation of your air ticket.

  2. Taking the pet onboard
Air travelling to Spain with your dog does not have to be an expensive option, but it requires some arrangements. Do your research and find out which airlines accept pets in the cabin or in the cargo hold.
For your and other passengers’ comfort the airlines can only take a limited number of pets in the cabin, so making a phone reservation for your pet is necessary. The airlines usually advise to do so at the latest within 24 hours after you have booked your ticket, but at least 24 hours before departure.
Usually, there are three travel options for animals:

      • in the cabin,
      • in the baggage hold,
      • in the baggage hold as cargo.

Please remember that the travel option depends on the weight and size of your pet as well as regulations of the country of destination. It is also worth mentioning, that the airlines may reserve the right to refuse carriage of the pet in case of reaching the limit of the number of pets carried on a given flight – both in the cabin and as cargo.
Here it is worth mentioning that American airlines allow you to bring two dogs to Spain with only $200 more as an additional cost. So it is good to check the special dog relocation offers associated with particular airlines.

  3. Choose Kennels but Crates Are Also Perfectly OK!
Once you have selected the right airline, the next step is to create an inviting space for your dog. You should go through the requirements of the airline for the kennel size, but it is also important to spend considerable time in making the temporary home of your pet as comfortable as possible.
The Spanish Security system also demands the wearing of a muzzle for certain breeds, such as American Staffordshire Terriers, Rottweilers, and Dogo Argentinos, etc.
  4. Check Whether Your Pet Is Carry-on or Cargo Baggage?
Of course, your pet cannot tell how you should take it to Spain. It is up to you to decide whether to carry it as Carry-on, or Cargo Baggage. Here you should keep in mind that if you want to take your dog as checked Baggage, it will be on a first-come and first-serve basis. It obviously works for only one or two pets.
So, if you have a family of three to five or even more pets, you should book all your pets in Cargo.
  5. Moving To Spain By Sea
If you are moving to Spain by sea with your dog, you will need to approve your pet at different points by showing the documents and paperwork

Wrapping Up
You may face some challenges while moving your pet from the US or any other country to Spain, so bring a dose of patience with you.
Never mind if things don’t go as planned. However, by focusing on the above-mentioned tips you can ensure a safe and relaxing journey.
Happy Hunting!
