Relocating across approximately 1,500 miles requires precise logistics, and transit times depend on the specific service volume you book. Because we do not run rigid weekly schedules, we dispatch our vehicles entirely on-demand as per customer orders, allowing us to offer highly flexible loading windows that fit your timeline.
Because we dispatch vehicles on-demand directly from your origin, our transits compare highly favorably to closer European lanes:
We do not restrict your move to fixed drop-off depots or rigid timetables. Instead, we send our vans and lorries directly to your doorstep anywhere in mainland Portugal, custom-routing our vehicles to match your specific booking dates.
Since the UK officially left the European Union, relocating your household belongings from Portugal to the UK is legally treated as an import. However, returning British expats and relocating Portuguese citizens can completely bypass the standard 20% UK import VAT and customs duties by claiming Transfer of Residence (ToR) relief from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). To qualify for tax-free entry, you must have lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months and have owned and used your personal effects for at least 6 months.
While countries like France require a local CERFA form, and Spain requires a padrón, the Portuguese customs authorities (Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira) have their own localized requirements for export clearance. To prevent border delays, you must provide your Portuguese NIF (fiscal number) and a signed Value Declaration Form alongside your UK paperwork.
| Required Document | Purpose of Document | Legal Source or Specification |
|---|---|---|
| HMRC ToR1 URN | Your approved tax-exemption reference number from UK customs | Must be applied for online via GOV.UK prior to the move |
| Copy of Passport | Verifies your identity and legal right to relocate | Clear, high-resolution photocopy of your passport photo page |
| Portuguese NIF | Verifies your fiscal status in Portugal for export customs clearance | Copy of your Número de Identificação Fiscal |
| Value Declaration Form | Standard Portuguese declaration of household goods value | Provided by us, to be completed and signed by you [cite: 4]. |
| Valued Inventory List | Detailed packing list detailing volumes, weights, and values | Completed in metres using our standard Excel spreadsheet template |
| Proof of Residency | Confirms your 12-month residency history in Portugal and your new UK destination | Utility bills, bank statements, or rental contracts |
Additionally, your inventory packing list must convert all box dimensions from centimetres to metres (Centimetres ÷ 100 = Metres) to avoid volume calculation issues. Once HMRC issues your ToR1 approval, our customs clearance office uses the standard procedure code CPC 40 00 C01 under the Chapter 99 commodity code to clear the UK border smoothly and tax-free.
Please note that transporting protected plants, seeds, soil, alcohol, tobacco, and perishable foods is strictly prohibited under our standard carriage terms.
We strongly advise against shipping your goods before receiving your approved Transfer of Residence (ToR1) Unique Reference Number (URN) from HMRC. Shipping without a valid URN means your shipment cannot be cleared as a tax-free relocation.
This can lead to your household goods being blocked at the UK border, resulting in standard 20% import VAT, heavy customs duties, and expensive port storage fees.
Yes, due to strict post-Brexit biosecurity, environmental, and customs regulations. We are legally prohibited from carrying perishable foods, live plants, seeds, soil, alcohol, tobacco, and live animals in our removal vehicles.
Additionally, standard prohibited items include hazardous materials, flammable liquids, and goods that may encourage vermin or pests.
Yes, private vehicles can be imported as part of your relocation, but they must be declared separately. You must include your vehicle’s make, model, year of manufacture, and Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on your ToR1 application. Once your goods arrive in the UK, you will need to complete a NOVA notification and officially register the vehicle with the DVLA.
Our quotes include up to two hours of driver loading and unloading assistance completely free of charge. However, if your property has highly challenging access—such as narrow historic streets where our van cannot park, long carrying walks from the vehicle, or higher-floor flats without an elevator—additional labor fees starting from £50 per hour may apply.
Please discuss your property’s access details with our customer service team during booking.
To secure your preferred moving date and dispatch your vehicle, we require a secure 10% online deposit at the time of booking. The remaining 90% balance must be settled before unloading at your UK destination. You can pay this remaining balance directly to the driver in cash (we accept both Sterling and Euros) or via bank transfer, provided a validated payment receipt is submitted to us before unloading begins.
